gratitude [2001]
well I am so so lucky, this life I’m living
where every decision is a luxury and I’m free
to walk, to ride, to run
from one end of the planet to another and beyond
if my heart desires, and yes it’s on fire
burning, churning, every day I’m learning
what it means to be
in this wealthy minority
and I can’t help but ask why me, why me why me?

i conclude with gratitude
that I’ve got to make the most of this opportunity
i give thanks for my circumstance
and vow to spread the love to the best of my ability

don’t take it for granted, over-indulge, bulge
waste time living nine to five not alive
hardly living, you know it’s all about giving
to yourself, your family, community and beyond
make healthy bonds with those around
and cherish those special connections you’ve found
and they’re bound to grow in strength, we need it to get us through
inspire each other with what we can do
to make this a better place to be
and keep on going till every brother and sister is free

as a world of chaos is turned upside down
be still within, listen to the sound
of the life-force pumping through the air, through the ground
this is our chance, our power is now
to celebrate, create, for life is precious and to be embraced
in the face of evil, have faith and pray

Jonny had a boat he sailed it upon the river
He loved the way the sunlight on the water did glitter
Every morning when he woke, Jonny’d raise his hands to the sky
Saying give thanks for this day, I give thanks for life
He was a continuous cruiser

He sailed his boat on the river

A happy man was Jonny for he was free to roam
A river his best friend, a boat his home
He could think of no better way for life to be
For blessed are those who set themselves free yeah

Well I’m sittin here in this room, been my home now for 2 years
That’s a long time for me, and now it’s been decided
It’s time for some transformation – I’m not gonna fight it

They say that transformation comes from desperation
And inspiration leads to celebration
I feel a change comin on, hard and strong

Red-faced man, red-faced man
It’s not too late to change your plan
Do ya really want to go on living life as you are?
Red-faced man, red-faced man, it’s not too late to change your plan
Do ya realise your life’s in your hands?
Oh red-faced man to me, you’re the epitome of this disempowered society
A system based on greed, and not necessity

And when I asked him if he enjoys what he does – there was a big big long pause
And then the question got ignored and he told me how good he was at what he does
I said ‘hey, that’s great, but you just finished telling me how much you hate not being able to have it easy, there’s no difference between you and me except I’m looking for freedom of mind and spirit – if you wanna know joy, you’re gonna have to get with it’

He’s jealous of my freedom, imprisoned by his own mind
‘how dare you be so happy’, he cried, ‘how dare you be having such a good time!’
Mr Red-faced man do you see the stars at night – do you hear the bird’s call, do you envy their flight?
